Your usual size is probably wrong here
Compression sizing does not work like shirt sizing, and the mistake goes in one direction.
Written by the TAILONG team · sources read 20 September 2026
Ask ten men what went wrong with their first compression tank and nine will say the same thing: they ordered the size they wear in everything else, and it felt like a costume. The tenth ordered a size up and got a plain undershirt that does nothing.
A dress shirt is cut to hang off you. A compression tank is cut to be smaller than you and to stretch onto you. Those are opposite jobs, and the label letter means a different thing in each.

Measure the part that has to stretch
For a tank or a tee, the measurement that decides the fit is your chest at the widest point, taken over bare skin with the tape level and not pulled tight. For shorts and waist bands it is the waist where your trousers actually sit, which for most men is lower than where a tailor would measure.
Write the number down before you look at any chart. Reading the chart first makes you choose the letter you want and then find a way to justify it.
| What you are buying | Measure | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Tank, tee, bodysuit | Chest, level, over skin | Take the size whose chest range contains your number |
| Shaping shorts, briefs | Waist where trousers sit | Same, and check the hip range too |
| Waist band | Waist at the navel | Bands cover a range, so take the smaller band if you are between two |
Where the range actually runs
TAILONG lists sizes S to 4XL, but not every line carries every size. In this range 8 pieces are 4XL, against 50 at L, which is the size men buy most. If you need the top of the chart, check the size line on the piece itself rather than assuming the whole shelf goes that far.

A bigger size is not a gentler garment
Here is the part that trips people up. Going up a size in compression does not give you a looser version of the same effect. It gives you a garment whose panel sits in the wrong place: the doubled panel that should cross your stomach lands on your hips, and the hem that should stay tucked rides up by lunchtime.
If you are between two sizes and the piece has a firm doubled panel, take the larger. If it is a single layer, take the smaller. That rule comes from reading what buyers wrote rather than from any chart, and it is the closest thing to a shortcut we can offer honestly.

Where the tape stops helping
A chest measurement gives a number, not a shape. Two men measure 42 inches: one carries it across the shoulders, the other carries it at the front. The first should order his measured size, and the second is usually happier one size up. A tape cannot tell you which man you are. That is why the size question keeps coming back no matter how many charts get published.
